Red Centre

The Red Centre building is located on Middle Campus, Grid Reference H13.

The Red Centre has three wings (east, centre, west). Each wing can only be accessed from the outside on the Main Walkway or Burrows Lane. The Red Centre houses:

  • Built Environment Student Centre and Multimedia Unit (West Wing, Level 3)

  • Built Environment Computing Unit (West Wing, Level 2 RM 2032)- students may need to come here in week 1 to go get their Faculty log in.

  • School of Mathematics and Statistics (Centre Wing)

  • UNSW International (East Wing, Ground Floor)

  • Exchange Office

  • Security Services (Undercroft) - Provides a safe working environment for the UNSW community, maintains security monitoring services, and manages Emergency Preparedness. Runs the UNIBEAT shuttle bus and escort service, and provides personal safety information. The security 'shopfront' is at FM Assist although security personnel are located at Red Centre 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

There is also a Unibeat stop in front of UNSW International (International Square) and a Security Help Point in the Red Centre undercroft.

The FBE Gallery

The Built Environment now has its own gallery for the display of work by students and staff of its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. This large open space, located on the ground floor of the Red Centre building, looks out onto one of the busiest thoroughfares on campus.

Given that the diversity of the Faculty’s programs, the gallery has been specially fitted out to accommodate a range of displays – from models and objects, to plans, drawings and digital projection. It also includes a mezzanine level that programs can use as a small studio or working space in conjunction with the large display area below.

West Wing

The Red Centre - West Wing contains the offices, teaching spaces for the Built Environment faculty. The Student Centre is separate and accessed through the Main Walkway only. The rest of the wing can be also be accessed from the Main Walkway. After 6pm, swipe card access is required for students of the Faculty. Swipe card access is also available from the rear of the building at Burrows Lane.

Floors

  • Basement: contains the Electron Microscope Unit and Security Services. Security Services in the back of office entrance to UNSW Security. All enquiries about Security and their services should be made through FM Assist.

  • Ground Floor: contains a foyer display space, access to the Main Walkway and Burrows Lane, access to upper levels of the wing and the Computer Resource Centre and the Red Centre Theatre (G001) which is accessible from the outside.

  • Mezzanine Floor: contains a teaching space (RCM001) across the glass walkway. X-Print and the Media and Marketing Unit and FBEOutThere! are also located on this floor.

  • First Floor: contains larger teaching and workshop spaces, the Centre for Health Assets Australia. Photocopier and printing facilities are also available on this floor, including an A0 plotter. A FBE Copy Card is required to be purchased from the card machine in the photocopy room on this floor.

  • Second Floor: contains teaching and offices spaces, Computer Labs 1 and 2 and the Built Environment Computer Unit (BECU).

  • Third Floor: contains teaching and office spaces, Computer Labs 3, 4 and 5 and the Built Environment Student Centre.

  • Fourth Floor: contains teaching and office spaces and Programming Support Unit.

  • Fifth Floor: contains teaching and office spaces and the Dean's Office.

  • Sixth Floor: contains larger teaching and workshop spaces.

Theatres

The Red Centre Theatre (G001) is located on the Ground Floor accessible from the Main Walkway.

Toilets

Toilets are located on all floors of the Red Centre - West Wing (excluding the Basement and Ground Floor).

  • Mezzanine Floor: male, female and disabled toilets.

  • First Floor: male and female toilets.

  • Second Floor: male and female toilets.

  • Third Floor: male and female toilets.

Centre Wing

The Centre Wing of the Red Centre contains the teaching and office spaces for the School of Mathematics & Statistics in the Faculty of Science. The wing can be accessed from the Main Walkway and from the rear of the building at Burrows Lane.

  • Ground Floor: of the Centre Wing contains teaching spaces and the Computing Centre and access to the Main Walkway, Burrows Lane and the upper levels of the building.

  • Mezzanine Floor: contains Computing Centre and male toilets.

  • First Floor: contains contains teaching and office spaces and male, female and disabled toilets.

  • Second Floor: contains teaching and office spaces, male, female and disabled toilets and access to the Old Main Building via an elevated walkway.

  • Third Floor: contains the School of Mathematics & Statistics Offices & Enquiries (room 3070), First Year Office (room 3072), and the Head of School (room 3077) and male, female and disabled toilets.

  • Fourth Floor: contains office spaces and male, female and disabled toilets.

East Wing

The East Wing of the Red Centre contains a majority of the services and facilities relating to international students as part of UNSW International and the Exchange Office.

The entrance is located at International Square.

  • First Floor: contains the Exchange Office and male, female and disabled toilets.

  • Second Floor: contains the offices of International Relations and Exchange & Practicum Programs and male, female and disabled toilets.

  • Third Floor: contains offices for UNSW International including the Office of the Executive Director and International Operations & Marketing Services and male, female and disabled toilets.

Trivia

  • There is an interior courtyard in the Red Centre accessible from the Ground Floor of the Red Centre - East Wing.
  • Despite being all one building, it isn't possible for you to get from one wing of the building to the other without going outside.
  • The West Wing first floor toilets are hidden at the end of a long corridor followed by a footbridge that leads you to the East Wing - without giving you any access to anything else in it than the aforementioned toilets.
  • Considering that the Red Centre - West Wing houses architects, you would think that it would look better.

History

  • The building was opened in 1999 by John Niland, the then-Vice-Chancellor and namesake of the John Niland Scientia

  • The Red Centre, Robert Webster Building and Scientia won the Lloyd Rees Award from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects New South Wales Chapter in 2000.
