Transport to UNSW

Walking/cycling

There are bike racks located all over the campus where you can chain up your bike, including outside the Library and the UNSW Lifestyle Centre. For more information about riding to UNSW, routes, and a bike bus from Central see the UNSW Bike Club page

In addition, several useful landmarks are within walking distance of the university:

  • It takes between 10-20 minutes to walk from one end of the university to the other (i.e. Gate 9 to Main Gate or vice versa), depending on your walking speed.

  • Royal Randwick Racecourse is about 15 minutes' walk from Gate 9. This is important as a significant proportion of exams are held at the racecourse.

  • Centennial Park is about 30 minutes' walk from Main Gate

  • Coogee Beach is about 25-30 minutes' walk (mostly downhill) from Gate 9

  • Randwick Junction, which has some quite handy bus routes and quite a few useful shops including 2 supermarkets, is only 5-10 minutes' walk from Gate 9

  • David Philips playing fields (primarily for cricket/soccer) are about 15 minutes' walk from Main Gate

Express buses to and from Central

In the morning, express buses (Route 891) depart from Eddy Avenue, Stand D, at Central Station. The first bus leaves at around 7.30 am, and the last at around 1.30 pm (or 10.15 am in the summer break). There are 3 stops, all on High Street:

  1. Opposite Gate 2: best for the UNSW Lifestyle Centre, the Roundhouse precinct and Lower Campus.

  2. Opposite Gate 8: best for the Library, Central Lecture Block (CLB) and Middle Campus.

  3. Opposite Gate 9: best for Upper Campus, including the Wallace Wurth Building, the Biological Sciences Building and the Biomedical Lecture Theatres.

In the afternoon and evening, express buses to Central depart from Gate 9 (Route 891) and Anzac Parade (opposite the Main Gate, Route 895). The first services leave just after noon and the last services depart around 7pm from Gate 9 and 8.30pm from Main Gate (or 6.30 pm for both during the summer break).

The express journey to or from Central typically takes 15-20 minutes depending on traffic and which part of the campus you are going to.

A small number of services also operate to and from Circular Quay. The morning service to uni is route 890, while the evening service is route 892, which also goes via Central Station.

As of August 2007, all express buses to and from UNSW are prepay only, meaning you will need a valid TravelTen or TravelPass to board the bus; either a single dip of a brown TravelTen or two dips of a blue TravelTen. These can be bought at any train station at the ticket outlets or from many newsagents including those on campus. Many people buy combined TravelPasses which include unlimited train, bus and ferry travel within certain boundaries. These may also be bought from the aforementioned outlets.

Buses during O-Week

Express buses will be running during O-Week, however they are not free as for the Info Day in January.

Which bus do I get for...

In most cases, an option is given to go to/from Main Gate or Randwick Junction. The Library and Commerce Courtyard roughly represent the midpoint between these bus stops, to give you an idea of which is closer depending where you are on campus.

Bondi Junction

Bondi Junction is a major shopping area in the Eastern suburbs, as well as being a major transport interchange for the area. A brown TravelTen is sufficient to get to Bondi Junction.

  • To Bondi Junction: Route 400 or 410 from either Anzac Parade (opposite Main Gate or from Gate 9 on High Street. These routes run frequently, with a bus arriving every 10-15 minutes, and closer to every 5 minutes during peak hour.

  • Allow 15-20 minutes for the journey in either direction.
  • From Bondi Junction to Bondi Beach: Routes 333 (Prepay express), 380, 381 and 382. Buses are very frequent (usually not more than 5 minutes wait; allow 10 minutes for the journey itself). A blue TravelTen is sufficient.

Central

Aside from the express buses, there are several other routes that will take you to or from uni when express buses are not available. To/from Eddy Avenue, :

  • Along Anzac Parade to Main Gate: Routes 391, 393 and 395. The last of these buses leaves around 10.45 pm, so after this time you will need to get a bus back to the city instead.

  • Along Alison Road to Randwick Junction (a short walk to Gate 9 down High Street): Routes 372, 374 and 376. Note that routes 374 and 376 do not stop at Eddy Avenue on the way back to the City, so you will need to get off on Foveaux Street, and walk about 20 metres to cross Elizabeth Street to get to the Central Station entrance.

  • Allow 25-30 minutes for the journey in either direction.

City

Most buses to the City from Uni or Randwick Junction go via Anzac Parade to Taylor Square, down Oxford Street and then along Elizabeth Street to Martin Place and Circular Quay. A brown TravelTen is sufficient to go from Uni to Circular Quay.

  • To Main Gate: Routes 392, 394, 396, 397 and 399.

  • To Randwick Junction (a short walk to Gate 9 down High Street): Routes 373 and 377. Routes 374 and 376 also go to the City along Elizabeth Street after stopping near Central Station.

  • Allow 25-30 minutes for the journey in either direction.
  • If you wish to get a train, it is a fairly short walk (~5 minutes) from the stops on Elizabeth Street, near Bathurst Street (Starbucks) or Martin Place, down to George Street for Town Hall and Wynyard Stations respectively.

Coogee Beach

Coogee is the closest beach to UNSW, and there are several bus services available.

  • From High Street, opposite Gate 9: Route 370. This is probably the most direct route but is relatively infrequent (once per 20-30 minutes at most times of day).

  • From Randwick Junction: 372 and 373.

  • Allow 10-15 minutes travel time.

Maroubra

  • To/from Maroubra Junction only: Route 400

  • To/from Maroubra beach, via Anzac Parade: Routes 396 and 397.

  • To/from Maroubra beach, via Randwick Junction: Routes 376 and 377.

  • Any stops along the way up to Maroubra Junction: 393 - 399

Newtown/Sydney Uni

  • From Gate 9: Route 370

  • From anywhere on campus: bus back to Railway Square (at Central Station), then a route 422, 423, 425, 426, or 428. These go down Broadway, past Sydney Uni and down King Street in Newtown. The 422 continues all the way down King St, while the other routes turn down Enmore Road. This can be a more convenient route sometimes, as it avoids a lot of traffic during peak hour and can be more frequent in off-peak, when 370s are irregular.

Sydney Airport (Domestic and International)

  • From Gate 9 or Main Gate: Route 400 to Burwood. 400s to Rockdale do not go to the Airport.

  • Allow around 40-45 minutes.

Private transport

Parking in and around UNSW is limited, so allow extra time to find a parking spot and walk back to uni if you intend to drive. Public transport is frequently an easier option because of this.

On-campus parking

Most parking areas on campus are restricted to permit holders. Students can purchase an after-hours permit (valid 3.30pm-7.30am Monday-Friday), while all-day permits are only available to staff and PhD students. Permits are issued by FM Assist. Having a parking permit does not guarantee you will find a space.

All-day and half-day parking without a permit is only permitted in the top 2 levels of the Barker Street Parking Station and Botany Street Parking Station. An hourly or daily charge applies. When these parking stations are full, a sign will be displayed at the appropriate entrance gate stating CASUAL PARKING CLOSED. Metered short-term (2-hour) non-permit parking is also available from most entrance gates, although spaces are limited.

Temporary permits may also be arranged under special circumstances, for example if you are pregnant.

Off-campus parking

While free of charge, street parking close to the university is very limited in number and many of the closest spaces also have time limits, typically 1 or 2 hours. It is very important to make sure you are parked legally, not just because of the road rules but because Randwick Council parking officers are fairly vigilant around the university and if you exceed the time limit in a spot, or park in a bus zone at the wrong time, you are likely to get fined and potentially towed away. Popular places to park include High Street, Wansey Road and Anzac Parade.

Disabled Access

UNSW provides disabled parking on campus. There are designated disabled parking places in each carpark and in a number of other locations on campus. Furthermore, holders of a disabled parking permit may park for free in metered carpark spaces.
